The Tartaro Wood is located in the Grandi Valli Veronesi, within the ancient bed of Tartaro river, just past the hamlet of Torretta Veronese, near the road which connects Legnago to Castelmassa. It was created and developed by the will of the Reclamation Consortium Grandi Valli Veronesi and it is a unique place, where was recreated the typical and suitable environment for the fauna that populated the woods of Basso Veronese some centuries ago: about 15.000 native trees. It is an area of great economic and commercial importance, due to the abundance of waterways which were useful transport routes in the past.
As a proof of the historical importance of the area, the stone base of the tower "Croxeta" has been placed at the entrance of the wood, being that tower a customs border both in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance.
You can walk or cycle along a three-kilometre track, surrounded by thick shrubs gradually thinning out and turning into tall trees. Inside the wood there are country-elm-trees, ash-trees, country-maple-trees, wild cherry-trees, elder-trees, hawthorns and hazel-trees.
