Statue of Michele Sanmicheli

Michele Sanmicheli (Verona, 1486/88-1559) was one of the most influential architects of the 16th century. He proposed the Roman Renaissance style in northern Italy, projecting a very wide range of architectural types: churches, chapels, palaces, villas, town gates and fortifications. He became an engineer for the fortifications in the service of the Republic of Venice. There are a lot of his noteworthy buildings in Verona.

The statue was made by Giovanni Battista Troiani in 1874, and represents the architect placed on a high pedestal dressed in 16th century clothes. On the left side there is a fragment of a pillar with a model of a bastion; behind the right foot there is an Ionic capital.
