Salieri Theatre

The present structure of the Salieri Theatre dates back to 1911, when the construction works based on the joint project of Vittorio Bressan and Benvenuto Maggioni started: they were assigned the task by a group of local residents gathered in the "Theatre Anonymous Company".

The structure of the new building was already well under way in 1914; only the roof and the facade were due for completion when works stopped due to the outbreak of the First World War. In 1925 the theatre hall and lobby were hastily arranged and furnished in order to celebrate the first centenary of Antonio Salieri's death, after whom the theatre was officially named. The "Theatre Anonymous Company" transferred the property of the building to the municipality, due to the economic difficulties preventing the building completion: the municipality opened the theatre on an ongoing basis and the building was exploited almost exclusively as a movie-theatre.

In 1941 the town council assigned the design of the theatre interior and facade to the architect Luigi Piccinato, but the rationalist project, based on the then cultural dictates, wasn't implemented. The Salieri Theatre was completed after the Second World War and it was opened on 15th September 1956. Thereafter and for more than thirty years it became the core of an intense performing activity and, at the same time, is was exploited as a movie-theatre.

In 1989 the theatre was closed due to a necessary extraordinary maintenance of the building and to comply with safety standards. Restoration works were assigned to the Veronese architect Luciano Cenna, who preferred to restore the original material, particularly in the decorative elements of the columns and pillars in the entrance hall and lobby. The Salieri Theatre was opened in its present structure on 13th February 1999.
