The name Monte Baldo referred to the presence of a station of departure for buses going to Spiazzi, a small village lying on the slopes of the homonym mountain. Then, between 1925 and 1929, the diary store was transformed into an “osteria” (tavern). During the years of the economic boom the tavern became a bar and cafeteria, in line with the tendencies of the time. Since 2004 the bar-café has returned to the origins thanks to Mr Gianni Vesentini and has recovered the peculiarity of the typical tavern of Verona.
The tavern is well-known for the wide selection of canapés and the selection of wines.
The original elements characterising this historical tavern are the pavement in terrazzo tiles from the 1920s and 1930s, the boiserie with mirrors in rectangular sections and the back wall of the bar. The external sign has been remade on the base of the original draft. The room on the first floor, previously used as a warehouse, has been renovated and opened to the public since a couple of years.
Interesting facts: Osteria Caffè Monte Baldo has been the first public place in Verona to have a radio in the years before World War II. Apparently, the small room in the back was once reserved for the so-called “bische”, namely bets of card and dice players, who gambled their money or personal goods.
Opening year: 1909
