Toward the end of the 1970s, the Municipality of Verona undertook a series of restoration works on the palazzo del Capitanio architectonic complex, in Piazza dei Signori. Excavations carried out on that occasion brought to light numerous Roman and medieval archaeological findings.
The area concerned includes the Palace courtyard, via Dante and part of the Palazzo del Comune (the Municipal Palace) and is one of the largest urban archaeological sites in Northern Italy.
The interesting archaeological site can be visited thanks to the restoration works carried out by the Veronese architect Libero Cecchini. This area has been housing photographic art events since 1996, and this is where the International Centre of Photography Scavi Scaligeri was founded to promote divulgation, study and development of the art of photography.
The exhibition site offers a unique setting both for traditional events – such as national and international artists’ exhibitions – and thematic workshops, didactic itineraries for adults and children, photography courses and performances whose contents are strictly linked to the material of each exhibition at a time.
Opening times
The activities of the Centro Internazionale di Fotografia Scavi Scaligeri are suspended, due to the necessary upcoming restoration works of the Palazzo del Capitanio.Contact
