The church, today of eighteenth-century appearance, was founded perhaps already in Carolingian times by the Benedictine order of the Brescian monastery of Leno, on the ruins of the time overlooking Roman Forum. Only in 1336 did the church become part of the provincial parish system.
The Benedictine complex also included the Monte di Pietà (opened in 1490).
Beneath the church, there is a Romanesque crypt (sec. XI) in line with the Roman Capitolium, a recent object of conservation intervention, in which there are some Roman ruins including a funerary stele.
