Church of the Holy Apostles

The church of Santi Apostoli is an early Christian foundation, but it was rebuilt during the 12th century, reworked several times till the 18th century and, at last, rebuilt after the 2nd world war. Only the outer original romanesque walls remain, together with the apses and the bell tower.

The inside, completely re-arranged, in the 1500s was reduced from three to two naves. From the sacrity you reach the basement where the little church of Saints Teuteria and Tosca is.

The worship of Teuteria goes back to the early Middle Ages and Tosca's appears in the 12th century, yet neither one was ever officiated.

The church was consecrated in 751, but a previous building  existing since the 5th century is attested.

In 1160 it was consecrated again when they found two corps believed to belong to the two female Saints and set them into a marble sarcophagus. Inside the church, above the 1700's altar, there is Saint Teuteria and Tosca's sarcophagus. The red marble coffin is of the 12th century, while the grey marble sculptures set in the front were set there in the 15th century.

On the right side of the altar there is the tomb of Francesco Bevilacqua, advisor of Cangrande II, the first of his family buried there in 1368. On the opposite side there is the 16th century white marble tomb dedicated to the three Bevilacqua brothers. The 1500's chest shaped urn shows the three theological virtues sculptured on it. On one corner of the church you can see the great 13th century baptismal font, made of one single marble block.
