In the municipality of Dolcè, a hamlet of Ceraino, there are the remains of an Austrian fortress on the Adige, for the control of goods and the payment of duties.
After the glaciers receded, the waters of the river in their search for lower ground began to carve its way through the wall of rocks, and during the course of the millennia, made a narrow scenic gorge where the Lock of Ceraino is located, between Ceraino and Volargne.
The lock also served as a checkpoint for goods and people entering the Veronese territory. Documents dating back to the sixteenth century show that the lock was guarded by soldiers in the dozens, and that there was a series of forts, the ruins of which can still be seen today.
