The edification (or reedification) of Santa Sofia's church dates back to the period between 831 and 845.
On the inner walls, restored after World War II, there are several frescoes on both sides dated back approximately between the 1300s and early 1400s. On the external plaster numerous inscriptions with names and dates testify the importance of the church through the centuries. The church overlooks an ancient transhumance road which is still used for the transit of flocks.
After the damage caused by the shakes of the recent earthquakes in 2012, the church is waiting for funds raising and donations in order to do the necessary restoration.
Opening times
The church is currently condemned but the enclosure can be visited by small groups on appointment with 24 hours of notice calling, sending and e-mail to the contacts at the top of this page or a request at the Facebook page below.
