The Romanesque church of Santa Maria del Degnano is a religious building located in Fumane (VR) in the hamlet of Vaio.
The first testimonies of the church date back to documents of 1163. At first it was part of a priory of the Abbazia of San Zeno, which owned some funds here. The building was completely rebuilt in the XV century while respecting the original Romanesque layout characterized by the presence of a bell tower.
Inside there is a cycle of frescoes and an altarpiece, by Paolo Ligozzi, painted a few years before the Great Plague of 1630. On the ceiling they are framed by grotesque scrolls and some rounds illustrating the Litanies. On the walls, there are depictions of the life of the Madonna and ten sibyls bearing prophecies, while the corners are decorated with the figures of Saints Rocco, Sebastiano, Zeno and Benedetto.
Opening times
The Church is private and not visitable, because it has been dameged by the last earthquake.Contact
