Santa Eufemia church is of a remarkable size and interesting artistic value. It is located few steps away from Porta Borsari and Della Vittoria bridge.
It was built bertween 1275 and 1450 by the Augustinian friars who in 1262 had obtained the permit to have their own in Verona and they settled down in this area where there was already a little homonymous church since the 11th century. Because of the damages caused by the passing of time, the interior structures needed severe repairs and changes which were made in 1700 and 1800. Those damages were caused also by military requisitions and changes of tastes in styles.
The facade is made by bricks and in neo-gothic style. The portal is quite big and is surmounted by a pointed arch decorated with fine embroideries and on top is Santa Eufemia's statue.
At the sides of the facade there are two big renaissance mullioned windows with tympanum tops, at their bases two hanging urns: on the right side is Cavancan Cavalcanti's romanesque sarcophagus, very simple and with no epitaph; on the left Tommaso Lavagnoli's renaissance sarcophagus which is embedded into an elegant marble aedicula designed by Sanmicheli. Two more sepulchres are along the left side of the church where there is also a side entrance whith an elegant protiro with nice 1400's frescos. On the left side of the facade there is a door which leads to the 1600's cloister which is left from the suppressed convent, enriched by doric columns and aedilula windows. During summer time some interesting theaters shows are given.
The inside is one great nave having a barrel vault, a big arch of triumph, two twin chapels and a deep presbytery. On each sides there is a sieries of seven altars filling the space and enriche it with precious altar-pieces which well represent Veronese painting of the 1500's.
On the right side of the presbytery there is Spolverini's Chapel, with its severe gothic structure and which still has the original pavement with tombs marble slabs and other painting works which include the three scenes of "Tobiolo's journey" made in 1500 by Giovan Francesco Caroto and the remains of precious 1400's frescos. On the left side is the chapel of Bell tower, where there is a fresco by Stefano da Verona which was on the little external protiro of the side door. Particular attention should be paid at the 14th D'alvermes' sarcophagus, placed at the bottom of the apse behind the high altar: a monumental work, with four columns holding a marble sarcophagus decorated with flowers subjects and coat of arms. Above it is a painting with Madonna and prophets by Felice Brusasorzi.
