The church of San Procolo is dedicated to the fourth bishop of Verona ( 310-330 a.C.). Founded during early christian age (5th or 6th century A.D.), built inside a large rom an and christian necropolis, it was rebuilt in the 12th century and interior restored in the 16th century.
A restoration in 1985-88 discovered several archeological remains.
The hut style facade shows two mullioned windows , one hanging protiro (whose arch is decorated with frescos of the 16th century) and one big octagonal window of the 18th century.
Inside are preserved art works by Antonio Badile and Giambettino Cignaroli. By the central stairway we go down to the crypt built along with the church since the first half of the 11th century. Half way of the stairway we can see the remains of the early christian age church and of the necropolis (tombs, calcareous sheets, foundations made of river pebbles and mortar, a roman lead sarcophagus, a roman inscription and decoration).
The crypt is in three aisles, laid on 6 columns and 12 pilaster strips on the perimetral walls topped with re-used capitals of different ages. The most ancient of them are of the 8th century and are reworked versions of a corinthian capital; the others are of the 9th and 10th century and show geometrical decorating elements, animals and vegetables. A recent restoration has discovered wall decorations and frescos of the 12th, 13th and 14th century.
