Founded in 1046 to be a monastery for the Benedictines, it was completely renewed in a renaissance style after being given the congregation of San Giorgio in Alga, in 1441.
The building is dominated by the great Sanmicheli’s dome, which was built after chopping the tufa roman tower, at the side of the church. The white marble facade is in two orders with niches exposing statues of Saints. The interior is one single aisle, sided by chapels of the 16th century.
The paintings which are here preserved are of great quality and value. In addition to Domenico Tintoretto’s paintings, Domenico and Felice Brusasorci’s, Bernardino India’s, Giovan Francesco and Francesco Caroto’s, Paolo Farinati’s and Moretto da Brescia’s, we should also appreciate Christ's Baptism by Jacopo Tintoretto, the hatches of the organ which were painted by Girolamo Romanino and the Holy Conversation by Girolamo dai Libri. Inside the apsis, the Sanmicheli's style altar shows the wonderful Saint George's martyrdom, masterpice by Paolo Veronese, his greatest and most beautiful work of art preserved in Verona.
