The Gates of Bra Square are the primary access point to the ancient city. Those arriving from Porta Nuova can enjoy, looking at the battlements, the panorama of the high mountains of Carega that rise in the distance.
The pentagonal tower dates back to the period of the Visconti reign, commissioned by Gian Galeazzo Visconti. It consists of two imposing round arches of Verona marble and a large clock, gifted to the city in 1871 by Count Antonio Nogarola. The complexity and functioning of the clock required numerous interventions, which were only resolved in 1879 thanks to Bortolo Montemezzi, a watchmaker of Vigasio (VR).
To best admire Piazza Bra and discover the walkways and battlements of this door up close, we recommend a visit to the upper floor of the Museo Lapidario Maffeiano, whose entrance is immediately to the left of the gates.
