The construction of the door dates back to the I century a.D. and, at the beginning, it was called Porta Iovia, as nearby there was the temple dedicated to Jupiter Lustrale (which can be now seen in the gardens adjacent to the Monumental Cemetery).
In the Middle Age it assumed the name of Porta San Zeno and, subsequently, took the current name of Porta Borsari, referring to the Bursarii, the soldiers on guard with the bag that collected the bishop's duties.
