If every great wine has a story, the story of Coffele wines tells first of all about an encounter, that between Giovanna Visco and Giuseppe Coffele. When the last heir of the Visco family, the historic wine estate of Soave, married Giuseppe she brought with her as dowry about 25 hectares of vineyards located in Castelcerino: one of the most suitable cru in the Soave Classico area.
In 1971, the turning point. After many years spent restoring the vineyards, Giuseppe and Giovanna began to make wine by founding the Coffele Farm and thus fulfilling a passion that had grown over the years. A passion for the land, for the vine and for the search for an excellence that has its roots in the wine-making tradition of the Visco family, which produced “Bianco Soave” with its own grapes since the mid-nineteenth century, as evidenced by the chemical analyses published in the Gazzetta Chimica di Asti in 1874.
This story continues to this day: Coffele winery, which was born from the tenacity of Giuseppe and Giovanna, was enriched by the presence of Alberto and Chiara Coffele, respectively wine-making and sales manager.
Already considered “one of the promises of Venetian enology”, Alberto graduated from the prestigious Agricultural Institute of San Michele all’Adige and began his career in the family business. With pride, at the age of thirty he received the first great award for his work, the “Three Glasses”, for the Soave Classico Doc “Ca” Visco” 2003: a great satisfaction obtained from a wine ideally dedicated to her mother Giovanna and her ancestors. This success was replicated in the following two years: an important arrival point, but also a new challenge for a meticulous winemaker who every day follows with passion every aspect of the grape ripening and the winemaking processes. All of these with a single purpose: excellence.
Chiara is the “commercial soul” of the company. She graduated in foreign languages and literature in Bologna, with her sympathy and communication skills she has the task of explaining the characteristics of family wines to Italian clients, but especially to foreign ones. Thanks also to his work, between one plane and another, between Oslo and New York, Coffele wines are now appreciated and exported to different countries of the world, with an annual production of about 130,000 bottles.
Coffele winery now boasts a 27-hectare vineyard in a single body cultivated mainly in Garganega, but also in Trebbiano di Soave, Chardonnay and Sauvignon, as well as the more recent Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. A few years ago a new project started in Valpolicella, precisely in Campiano, a small hamlet of Cazzano di Tramigna, from which they get a “vintage” Valpolicella and, in very small quantities, Amarone della Valpolicella.
Starting with the 2014 harvest, Coffele is the first producer in the Soave Doc Classico area to be able to officially include the label “organic” and the Eurofoglia – the European logo that distinguishes organic products according to the regulations (Reg. EC Nos 834/2007, 889/2008 and 203/2012).
This certification is the result of a twenty-year commitment that, since Alberto Coffele’s arrival at the company, has led the company to choose cultivation methods that are more respectful of the environment and the health of consumers. These include the abandonment of the technique of weed removal, the decision not to use systemic products to avoid their permanence in the finished product and the use of earthworms to obtain humus and compost produced on the farm to maintain the fertility of the farm’s soils.
Coffele Family waits you in the historic center of Soave, behind the old portal that houses the winery: a place that recalls ancient traditions, ideal for tasting timeless aromas; but also in Castelcerino, where Tenuta Coffele is located, the ideal place to spend a few hours immersed in nature and its wonders.
