Churches along the route: San Zeno in Oratorio | San Lorenzo | Santa Teuteria e Tosca | Sant'Eufemia | San Giovanni in Foro | San Benedetto al Monte
This itinerary is part of the Verona Minor Hierusalem circuit, a cultural association created with the aim of enhancing the role of Verona as Little Jerusalem and its numerous and valuable examples of Christian architecture.
Like the pilgrims of the past, you can walk the ancient Via Postumia that once crossed the heart of the Roman city, admiring the testimonies of the city during the Roman period, Castelvecchio and the splendid palaces of Corso Cavour: a real journey back to the times that shaped my city.
The first church we meet on this route is San Zeno in Oratorio, where is kept the rock that, according to tradition, San Zeno, patron saint of Verona, used to sit to fish along the waters of the Adige. We continue towards Castelvecchio, the ancient Scaligeri family manor, and we come across the Arco dei Gavi, of Roman times, and then continue on Corso Cavour, where we find the splendid church of San Lorenzo, with its two large scalar towers on the facade and, inside, the only example of Verona still in sight of matroneo, and the Sacel of the Holy Teuteria and Tosca. These two young hermit lived here between the 7th and 8th centuries, whose history is all to discover while stopping to visit the building (on Saturdays you can find the volunteers, who will be happy to provide you with all the information you need).
Continuing your walk beyond Porta Borsari towards Ponte della Vittoria, take Via San Michele alla Porta and you will find yourself in front of the church of Sant'Eufemia, a few steps from Lungadige Panvinio, a place of worship originally linked to the Augustinian convent. In nearby Corso Porta Borsari, don't miss the small and charming church of San Giovanni in Foro, very close to Corte Sgarzerie and Piazza Erbe, known for its medieval loggia. You are now in the heart of ancient Verona, as you can well understand from the name of the church: Piazza Erbe stands in fact on the area of the Roman Forum.
Our final stop is the church of San Benedetto al Monte, located on the area where the Capitol once stood: don't miss the church's splendid crypt, recently restored.
You can find information material for your visit in the individual churches, at the IAT Tourist Office in Via degli Alpini, 9 and at the Infopoint of Verona Minor Hierusalem (little church of San Pietro Martire).
