Verona is so romantic!
- REDAZIONALE
My beloved Verona is the perfect place for a romantic weekend, not just because it is the city where Shakespeare set the most famous love story of all time. Of course, the places with a link to Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers represent a certain romanticism but fair Verona is not just about Romeo and Juliet: from romantic little restaurants to delightful views, the city is the perfect place to spend some unforgettable time with your loved one.
In the footsteps of Juliet
If this is your first time in Verona, you must not miss a visit to the place that is the symbol of all lovers: Juliet’s House. In one corner of Piazza Erbe is Via Cappello where, just a short walk way, you will find the archway bearing the crest of the da Cappello family (a name which Shakespeare changed to Capulets in his play), through which is the courtyard of Juliet’s House. And there she is! Our heroine, cast in bronze, on the far side of the courtyard, welcoming you and inviting you to touch her breast. According to local legend, the statue of Juliet is the keeper of true love and if couples touch her breast, they will get the happy destiny that she and Romeo were denied.
Can I hear wedding bells? If you are planning make your romantic dreams come true and you want to make your wedding day truly unforgettable, what better place could there be than Juliet’s House or tomb? In Verona, you can! Thanks to the city council’s Marry Me in Verona initiative, couples from all around the world can tie the knot in one of the city’s most famous places.
If you are in the city during the summer, do not miss the by the Teatro Nuovo’s production of Romeo and Juliet, performed in the very locations in the city where the play is set. A unique experience!
“There is a place in Verona where the heartbroken leave notes, asking Juliet for her help”
(from the film Letters to Juliet)
Do you remember the 2010 film with Amanda Seyfried and Vanessa Redgrave, where a young and beautiful aspiring journalist visits Verona and meets the Secretaries of Juliet?
The Juliet Club really exists here in Verona. For years, it has been on hand to help anyone who wants to confide their love to the most famous of all romantic heroines. They are the Secretaries of Juliet, patiently and passionately replying to millions of lovers who write to the Juliet Club to seek advice and reveal their heartbreaksi.
Explore Shakespeare your own way
Throughout the year, the Casa Shakespeare theatre company seeks to promote Shakespearean culture in the city, with performances that will take your breath away. If you want to experience something truly unique, I recommend their SIM, the Shakespeare Interactive Museum: a state-of-the-art multimedia experience which, through the story of Romeo and Juliet, helps you to discover the Shakespearean soul of the city.
A romantic aperitivo
On any romantic holiday, there has to be time for an aperitif and dinner in a special location! In the city centre, there are so many stylish and traditional eateries to choose from. If you are near to the Ponte Pietra bridge, call in to one of the osterie on via Ponte Pietra, where you can enjoy a class of wine on the terrace overlooking the river Adige. If you want to head for higher ground, cross the ancient Roman bridge, one of the most captivating places in the city along with the Ponte Scaligero, and take the funicular to the top. There waiting for you is castle San Pietro, the most romantic spot in the whole city. The view over Verona from up here is spectacular, especially at sunset. In such a spectacular setting, even the shyest of lovers will be moved to open their hearts.
Or why not stop off at dusk for an aperitif in Piazza Erbe and then climb the Torre dei Lamberti, where at certain times of the year you can also taste local wines at the highest point of the city.
Fall in love at the theatre
If you are in the city during summer, the best way to end the day is without doubt at the Arena or the Teatro Romano for a concert, a show or an opera, something of an institution here in Verona. And after the show, enjoy a candlelit dinner: there are many places in the city centre which stay open late, so that theatre-goers can round off their evening with an unforgettable dinner in the enchanting surroundings of Verona city centre. Lovers have always found something very special in Verona, a city where they can open their hearts to each other.
