The walk starts from the historic square where we find the "Lion of Avesa" statue. Along a well-marked path that winds along the eastern slope of Mount Ongarine, we quickly reach the "Busi di Avesa", ancient limestone quarries, also known as "latomie". Carved for centuries and once owned by the "Consortia degli Originari" miners, the quarries are now located in a forest of cypress trees, ash, hornbeam, and typically mesophilic shrubs.
The atmosphere in this place is incredibly evocative, and the panorama that can be admired over the entire underlying valley, is truly breathtaking! The ancient activity of extracting Avesa stone has contributed over the millennia to the construction of many buildings, including the Roman Theatre and numerous Romanesque churches scattered throughout the city center.
Surrounded by lush nature, we will immerse ourselves in local traditions and history.
