Summer at Verona’s Teatro Romano
- REDAZIONALE
Summer is magic in Verona, the season when the city explodes into life, with so many events such as concerts, theatre shows, dance performances and operas: there is something for everyone! Especially at the Teatro Romano, at the foot of Castel San Pietro.
Evenings at the Teatro Romano
The Roman theatre, not to be confused with the Arena, is a 1st century open-air theatre. Who knows how many performers have stood on this stage and what stories these walls would tell if they could talk! You can visit it during the daytime as one of the most important archaeological monuments in Verona, or go there in the evening for a show, sitting on its ancient steps. In this little corner of the city, with one of the best views of the Adige, people have watched outstanding Shakespearean performances, laughed along with Italy’s most famous comedians and danced to wonderful jazz concerts.
The Verona summer theatre season was set up in 1948 by the city council to pay homage to William Shakespeare and to highlight his deep bond with Verona, the city where he set works such as Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew and Two Gentlemen of Verona.
The season features many events throughout the summer, including performances of Shakespeare's plays and other works and jazz and dance music that you can enjoy in the magical surroundings of the Teatro Romano, overlooking the river. Down the years, the biggest names in Italian theatre have performed on this stage.
